ABSTRACT

This article highlights important facets of the diagnosis and management of seizures in neonates. Most seizures that occur in neonates are acute provoked seizures. Continuous electroencephalography monitoring and neuroimaging are essential to the evaluation of neonates with seizures. Once seizures are recognized, pediatric clinicians must immediately focus on acute stabilization, treatment with antiseizure medications, and determination of the underlying etiology. We hope this article imparts the reader with the foundations needed to provide optimal care for neonates with seizures, thus promoting brain development in this vulnerable population.
