ABSTRACT

Mumps, a common childhood viral infection can cause serious neurological complications. We describe the clinical and imaging findings of a 3-year-old boy presenting with retrobulbar neuritis, associated with mumps infection. The baby presented with high-grade fever, irritability and sudden loss of vision. The neuroimaging revealed bilateral retrobulbar neuritis and hyperintensities in the periventricular white matter. The parotid swelling was noticed 5 days after the development of retrobulbar neuritis, and serum mumps Ig M antibody was elevated. The vision improved completely after pulse methylprednisolone and intravenous immunoglobulin therapy.
