ABSTRACT

Menstrual health and hygiene (MHH) remain critical yet often overlooked aspects of adolescent girls’ health worldwide. This narrative review explores the challenges adolescent girls face regarding MHH, examining both personal and societal factors that contribute to inadequate menstrual education, insufficient access to sanitary products, cultural stigma, and gendered disparities. Additionally, this review presents solutions to these challenges, focusing on improved education, enhanced product accessibility, and policy frameworks aimed at dismantling stigma. Addressing these factors can lead to positive outcomes in educational attainment, mental health, and social development for adolescent girls globally. This review highlights the need for integrated approaches that prioritize menstrual health and hygiene within health, education, and social systems.
