ABSTRACT

Anxiety disorders are common, affecting between 10% and 20% of preschool children. Appropriate assessment should take a developmental approach to ensure that normative anxiety is not mistaken for an anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorders impact normative developmental trajectories and warrant treatment. Key aspects of management include supporting parents/caregivers to encourage their children to face their fears and remain empathetic of their child’s anxiety and distress. Therapeutic approaches should be trialed before initiation of medications in young children.
