ABSTRACT
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) survival is increasing in extremely premature or severely ill neonates which can result in the development of chronic medical problems in survivors. The mental health care burden on a family and child with chronic illness is well documented. This perspective review article serves to explore the mental health needs of families of NICU graduates with chronic illness. It also serves to discuss the opportunities for improvement in addressing mental health needs of families in the NICU and after NICU discharge with recommended opportunities at the individual, institutional, and national level.
