ABSTRACT
It is undeniable that internet use and access to social media (SM) have a profound impact on children and adolescents. Clinicians need to be aware of the several detrimental impacts that the excessive use of SM may have on their patients’ health. Displacement of other activities (sleep, physical activity, and personal interactions), cyberbullying, unhealthy social comparisons, misinformation, fear of missing out, and secondary gains are only some of the potential negative effects of SM on children’s mental health. The current increase in disorders of gut-brain interaction may be at least partially explained by the increase in use of SM.
